Disaster relief update — Pakistan and Mexico
Thank you to everyone who has donated so generously to our Pakistan disaster relief appeal. So far around 1,500 animals have been given food for 15 days, and now we're working with a local group called the Vet Care Club to plan the next phase of work in the area.
Meanwhile, in Mexico, after heavy floods forced 25,000 people to evacuate their homes, our vet team gave food and veterinary treatment to 500 animals that were left behind in the city of Tlacotalpan.

So far more than 85,000 people have signed our petition to end bear farming in South Korea. Following the tabling of a bill on September 15th, the South Korean parliament began the process that could result in the phase out of this brutal industry. The bill is now expected to be considered by the relevant government ministries. If it gets enough support, a policy to end bear farming could be put in place by the end of 2010, so it's crucial that we keep the pressure on by getting as many people to sign the petition as possible.

Success of Bali dog project leads to historic agreement
Following a successful pilot project carried out earlier this year by WSPA and member society the Bali Animal Welfare Association (BAWA), the Bali government has signed an agreement to vaccinate nearly 400,000 dogs as an essential first step towards eradicating rabies on the island by 2012. WSPA and BAWA have already vaccinated 70 per cent of the dogs in two of Bali's nine regencies. The new agreement will see this project extended to the rest of the island.

Current Appeal — Help Colombo's dogs
For the dogs of Colombo, Sri Lanka, every day is a struggle just to stay alive. Weak and emaciated, they scavenge through the city dump to find food. Painful diseases are widespread, and litters of puppies are born on the streets only to face a lifetime of suffering.
But they will get a better life, thanks to everyone who has donated to support WSPA's work with the Blue Paw Trust. Together, we are helping Colombo's dogs with a program of vaccination, sterilization, and education. If you would still like to donate to this appeal, it's not too late.

Romanian bear rescue
At the end of August, Romania's 52nd bear was rescued. Tello, a one-year-old bear, was being kept in a four by four metre metal cage at a guesthouse near Fargaras. The private keeping of bears in captivity is now illegal in Romania, so after a member of the public reported the situation to the authorities, a specialist team was able to rescue Tello and transport him to the WSPA-funded Zarnesti bear sanctuary, which is run by our member society Milioane de Prieteni. Tello will now live alongside five other young bears at the sanctuary.

How you've helped to Curb the Cruelty
After more than 10,000 of you wrote to your MPs asking them to support our Curb the Cruelty campaign, not only have a number of MPs spoken out in favour of improving farm animal transportation regulations and enforcement, but the CFIA has also proposed amendments to the current regulations to address our concerns. We've also met with the Auditor General to discuss the need to review the CFIA's inspection system. We're hoping to have more news when committee business resumes later this fall. In the meantime, please continue to circulate the Curb the Cruelty website and encourage even more people to take action on this issue.
