Simon Cowell says Animals Matter!
Simon Cowell has pledged his support for WSPA and our campaign for a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare. In his campaign video for WSPA he explains why animals matter to him and calls for other people to follow his lead by supporting a UDAW.
"All you have to do is add your name to the declaration - I'm encouraging people to sign it and send it to a friend as well. The Universal Declaration will mean so much; it would help governments appreciate the important role that animals play in our lives and in the environment we live in, and so inspire better legislation to protect animals around the world." Sneak peek: Choose Cage-Free campaign to launch this Spring

Did you know that 97% of Canada’s eggs come from factory farms? A hen in a factory farm will spend her whole life crammed into one tiny cage with as many as six other hens — sometimes even more. She can barely turn around, she can't spread her wings, and she'll never be able to go outside, scratch in the dirt, or build a nest.
To help raise awareness about the cruelty involved in the production of factory farmed eggs, WSPA Canada will soon be launching the Choose Cage-Free campaign. We'll be challenging schools, companies and individuals to make the switch to cage-free eggs and give more chickens a better life.
If you're interested in leading the charge for your own campus or company to go cage-free, email us at wspa@wspa.ca to find out how you can get involved in our campaign.

Take action: Keep animal cruelty a crime in Brazil!

A bill seeking to decriminalize cruelty to domestic and domesticated animals in Brazil has been put before Brazil's National Congress. If it passes, Brazil will have no set nationwide penalties for animal abuse, meaning cruelty to animals like dogs, cats and horses will be consequence-free.
So far 105,900 animal lovers from Brazil and around the world have protested this bill, including 4,200 Canadians. We need even more people to join us and show Brazil's politicians the world is watching.
|
Please sign our letter of protest, which we will be presenting to Brazil's party leaders. If you've already signed, please take a minute to help spread the word by forwarding our online action to a friend, or sharing it with your friends on Facebook or Twitter. Add your name >>

Last year, in an attempt to stop the spread of rabies, authorities in Bali began poisoning dogs, despite evidence that culling does not tackle the root causes of a rabies outbreak. WSPA has been working with our member society the Bali Animal Welfare Association (BAWA) to introduce a rabies vaccination and education program, designed to protect Bali's dogs and people.
The vaccination program started on December 10th and is now in full swing. As of mid March, the team had vaccinated an incredible 17,400 dogs. Read more >>

Greenland's whales safe — for now

Whales got a reprieve this month when a vote to award Greenland a hunting quota of 10 humpback whales was postponed by the International Whaling Commission (IWC) until June.
Commercial whaling is currently banned, but Denmark had requested the whaling quota on behalf of Greenland for aboriginal subsistence purposes. The IWC has already rejected this proposal twice, after our undercover investigation in 2008 showed that whale meat was being sold commercially in Greenland. As the IWC meeting in June approaches, we will be lobbying to ensure the proposal is rejected again, and taking action against other countries defying the whaling ban.
