A tornado that devastated 11 villages in Orissa, India, at the end of March, had a severe effect not just on the residents but also on the animals they depend on, killing and injuring hundreds of buffalo, cattle and goats.
WSPA's India-based disaster response team worked with local counterparts to provide emergency medical treatment for sick and injured animals and assess the situation.
With just over $12,000, provided by WSPA supporters, the team built 600 animal shelters and provided food for 2,000 vulnerable animals. Read the full story

Stop the long haul

Every year in Canada 3 million animals endure journeys, lasting days, weeks or months, in cramped conditions on their way to slaughter. © WSPA |
Around the world, farm animals are transported on long, gruelling journeys without food, water or rest. Hungry and thirsty, crammed into overcrowded trucks, forced to lie or stand in their excrement in extreme temperatures - the suffering is immense.
The fact that millions of animals arrive dead, diseased or injured shouldn't surprise us. More surprising is the fact that this suffering is still allowed to happen in Canada.
Meanwhile, New Zealand is considering resuming the export of thousands of live sheep to Saudi Arabia, a journey of more than 20 days. During the journey the sheep suffer hunger, stress, disease and often death, with no guarantee of a humane end.

Take action now
• Ask the Canadian Minister of Agriculture to stop the long distance transport of animals and strengthen regulations Go here
• Ask New Zealand High Commissioner not to resume live sheep exports to Saudi Arabia Go here

Just like humans, animal mothers nurture and protect their young, and help them grow into strong, independent animals.
By giving a Really Wild Gift this Mother's Day, you're not only showing that you care, you're supporting animals in need worldwide. Really Wild Gifts help WSPA in its fight to improve animal welfare around the world, whether that means freeing bears from the cruelty of bear baiting, working to stop the suffering of stray cats and dogs, or helping animals after a disaster.

Meet Inka, the newest addition to the Nyaru Menteng Sanctuary

Inka is now being given the care she needs at Nyaru Menteng. © BOS |
Inka was sold as a pet after her mother was killed while searching for food in a palm oil plantation. WSPA member society the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation educated the family who bought Inka on the difficulties of keeping an orangutan as a pet. The family then agreed to release Inka to be cared for at the Nyaru Menteng Sanctuary.
Weighing just two and a half kilograms when she arrived at the sanctuary, tiny Inka is now being taught lessons she never got to learn from her mother, such as how to find food in the forest and escape from predators. Read the full story

WSPA legacies make a lasting difference to animals
|
|
|
Make a long-term difference to animals with a legacy gift. © WSPA/Alistair Findlay |
May is legacy giving month in Canada, and in recognition of this we are encouraging our supporters to consider giving WSPA a legacy gift. These gifts are particularly important because they guarantee long-term funding, meaning that we will be able to continue helping animals who are in desperate need.
You can make a legacy gift by: leaving WSPA a gift in your will (either a fixed amount or a percentage of your estate); naming WSPA as the beneficiary of your RRSP, RRIF or pension plan or of your life insurance policy; or asking your financial advisor to include charitable giving in your long-term financial plan.
For more on legacy giving, contact Holly Hewitt, WSPA's Major Gifts Officer at 416-369-0044 ext.119, or request information by filling out the online form at www.wspa.ca/legacy.
